We’re on a mission to change the lives of marginalised young people through creative writing and storytelling. We make writing fun and rewarding and help them find their voice.
Based in Redfern (immediately behind the Martian Embassy and Gift Shop), we run free creative writing workshops aimed particularly at marginalised young people, those most at risk of losing confidence in their writing abilities and switching off at school.
Our innovative approach sees all workshops led by our expert storytelling team and delivered with the help of volunteer tutors who give students the one-on-one help even the best teachers cannot provide.
Our workshops are designed by creative writing and literacy experts to:
* improve written and oral communication skills;
* enhance self-confidence and self-efficacy;
* nurture creativity and empathy; and
* deepen engagement with learning.
A rigorous long-term evaluation of our programs, testing outcomes in these areas, is being conducted by academics at the University of Sydney. Preliminary indicators are very positive.
Since opening our doors we've taken over 6,000 student enrolments. Of these 22% are Indigenous and
44% are from non-English speaking backgrounds.
Every day when our workshops fill with the joyous noise and smiling faces of young people eager to get started on their next short stories, or comics, or poems, we know we’re doing something right.
